Switching to Chevrolet
NASCAR Cup
December 1, 2022
Live Fast Motorsports is joining the Chevrolet family in 2023. The Mooresville, N.C.-based team will campaign the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 for driver McLeod in the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series.
ANALYSIS
The team has most recently fielded Fords for McLeod and his other drivers of the No. 78 entry. They will be switching to Chevrolet for the 2023 season. Additionally, the team has partnered with ECR Engines for the power plants they'll run in their Chevy's next season. "Our team is excited to make this transition to Chevrolet," said McLeod, co-owner/driver of Live Fast Motorsports. "Chevrolet Camaros have proven great success on the track and Live Fast Motorsports is looking forward to becoming a part of this advance."

The veteran driver ran a near full-time schedule in 2022 with 29 of the 36 events to his credit. McLeod is a co-owner and driver of the Live Fast Motorsports No. 78 Chevrolet. Last season he only stepped aside when other drivers could bring sponsorship to help fund the team and buy seat time for those drivers. LFM is likely looking at another scenario similar to that in 2023 with McLeod again being the majority time driver. The team's decision to switch to Chevrolet in the upcoming season could bear immediate fruits and they will get engines supplied by ECR. Lee Leslie will guide McLeod and the other drivers at the crew chief position, and they will look for better results in the upcoming season.
McLeod will return to Live Fast Motorsports as primary driver and co-owner of this small race team. The 38-year-old Floridian took on his biggest Cup Series plate last season with this team and raced to one Top-10 finish in 28 starts. The surprise ninth-place finish in the Summer Daytona race was his first-career Top 10 in his 85-start career. McLeod will likely continue in about the same capacity with this team in 2022. Look for a handful of starts by other drivers, due to sponsorship issues, but it will be McLeod primarily running the show. He'll team with crew chief Frank Kerr once again and see what other surprises they can whip up in the team's No. 78 Ford.
This veteran driver will get to go full-time Cup Series racing this season. Ownership has combined with Joe Falk and the team has obtained Go FAS Racing's charter. That combined with a technical alliance with Stewart Haas Racing has birthed a new race venture called Live Fast Motorsports. McLeod will pilot the team's No. 78 Ford for the full 36-event schedule. He's a veteran of 57 Cup Series starts spread over five seasons. Now he'll get a crack at the full schedule and with what is likely his best ride to-date. Sponsorship is secure, the crew chief will likely be Todd Parrott and the equipment is Stewart Haas Racing quality. It should all add up to a pretty good splash for McLeod. The potential for performance and the upside is likely better than many of the drivers in the tier outside the Top 30.
This team is expected to race full-time, but with a number of different drivers behind the wheel. The vast majority of the starts should go to McLeod. It's yet to be determined how many, and who will race alongside the veteran. McLeod made 30 starts last season with 22 of those coming in the No. 15 Ford. The veteran driver claimed 11 Top-20 finishes although five of those came in another team's car. So the inconsistency behind the wheel, and unknown drivers are a limiting factor for this race team. The only concrete fact we can hang our hats on is that McLeod will field this car in all 33 events. It's typically running at the end of most races, although not terribly competitively.
This team is expected to race full-time, but with a number of different drivers behind the wheel. The vast majority of the starts should go to McLeod. It's yet to be determined how many, and who will race alongside the veteran. McLeod has made 25 and 26 starts respectively the last two seasons, however, split between the team's multiple cars. The veteran driver registered five Top-20 finishes last year, but also collected six DNF's. Lack of continuity in the driver's seat limits this team's ability to develop chemistry and race more competitively.
