Dominated in return from layoff
WelterweightUFC

Chiesa lost to Kevin Holland via submission (D'Arce choke) at 2:39 of Round 1 at UFC 291 on Saturday in Salt Lake City.
ANALYSIS
To say it didn't go well for Chiesa, who was fighting for the first time since November 2021, would be the understatement of the century. Everyone was well aware Mike was going to be in trouble if he was unable to get Holland to the mat. He failed on all five of his takedown attempts despite seemingly having his opponent in a compromising position on multiple occasions. It was a concerning effort on multiple fronts. Chiesa didn't speak after the fight, but he was shown taking his gloves off immediately after tapping, something that often signifies retirement. It wouldn't be surprising if that's the route he tries to go. The 35-year-old has lost three straight and is without a win dating back to January 2021. Chiesa is also an excellent in-studio analyst for the UFC. Stay tuned.

Matched up against Holland
WelterweightUFC
May 16, 2023
Chiesa will fight Kevin Holland in a welterweight duel at UFC 291 on July 29 in Salt Lake City, Shaheed Al-Shatti of MMAFighting.com reports Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Chiesa hasn't won since early 2021, suffering two defeats and most recently a cancelled bout with Jingliang Li. He'll look to get back on track against a tough opponent in Kevin Holland, who is coming off a win against Santiago Ponzinibbio in April.
Will not fight at UFC 287
WelterweightUFC
April 3, 2023
Chiesa will not fight Li Jingliang at UFC 287, according to MMAJunkie.com.
ANALYSIS
Li Jingliang suffered a fight-camp injury that will prevent his participation at UFC 287. Unfortunately for Chiesa, the UFC was unable to find a reasonable replacement for the Chinese welterweight, so Chiesa's fight was scrapped altogether. He will have to return at a later date instead.

Chiesa will fight Li Jingliang at UFC 287 on April 8, Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl reports.
ANALYSIS
April's fight will mark Chiesa's first since November 2021 -- a loss to Sean Brady. Meanwhile, his opponent will also be coming off a loss in his last bout and has split his last four.
Can't rebound from slow start
WelterweightUFC
November 20, 2021
Chiesa lost to Sean Brady via unanimous decision (28-29, 28-29, 28-29) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
Chiesa finished with a flurry and the result may have very well been different if this fight was scheduled for five rounds, but as is, he had no chance of earning the decision. Chiesa accomplished little outside of his strong finish. Known as a high-level wrestler with zero stopping power in his hands, Chiesa somehow allowed Brady to land 5-of-8 takedown attempts. It was a shocking development and a classic example of Chiesa being beaten at his own game. Chiesa was making a legitimate push towards a title shot with four straight wins from December 2018 to January of this year, but he now has back-to-back ugly losses on his resume in a span of a little over three months. Toss in the fact he turns 34 years old in a couple weeks, and you have a fighter who finds himself at a legitimate career crossroads.
Taking on Sean Brady in November
WelterweightUFC
September 2, 2021
Chiesa will fight Sean Brady in a welterweight bout Nov. 20, Brett Okamoto of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Chiesa took a step back by losing to Vicente Luque in August, but he won't need much time to have a chance to get back on track. Chiesa possesses a four-inch advantage in height and a two-inch advantage in reach versus Brady.
