Returns from long layoff with win
LightweightUFC
May 8, 2021
Gillespie defeated Diego Ferreira via TKO (strikes) at 4:51 of Round 2 at UFC on ESPN 24 on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
On the sidelines since a November 2019 knockout loss to Kevin Lee, Gillespie essentially had no choice but to accept this fight despite the fact Ferreira missed weight by 4.5 pounds on Friday morning. Gillespie was awarded 30 percent of his opponent's purse for his decision and still came away with the stoppage win he was seeking. It was a particularly impressive effort from Gillespie considering he appeared to be struggling in the later stages of Round 1. His gas tank was clearly trending in the wrong direction, but Gillespie flipped the switch and found a second wind before eventually finishing Ferreira. Gillespie is one of the better lightweights on the UFC roster. Expect to see him back in action sooner rather than later considering his extended layoff entering this fight. He'll also walk away with $100,000 extra from this matchup, as it was named Fight of the Night, but Ferreira was ineligible to receive his bonus due to missing weight.

Gillespie is set to take on a heavy opponent Saturday in Diego Ferreira, who weighed in at 4.5 pounds over the limit, MMAFighting.com reports.

Set to square off against Ferreira
LightweightUFC
April 13, 2021
Gillespie (COVID-19 protocols) will fight Diego Ferreira on the May 8 card, Brett Okamoto of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Gillespie's last fight was taken off the card due to COVID-19 protocols in late March, but he's quickly found a new opponent for less than a few months later. The pair are both coming off of respective losses to snap elongated winning streaks, so this fight should feature a pair of hungry fighters aiming to bounce back. Gillespie stands two inches shorter and sports a reach that falls three inches shorter than his opponent, so he'll likely go with his usual plan of attack to take his opposition to the ground. Ferreira has been reasonably successful at fending off those attempts, however, sporting a 68-percent efficiency in that regard.

March 20, 2021
Gillespie's scheduled fight against Brad Riddell At UFC Vegas 22 on March 20 has been canceled and will be postponed to a later date due to COVID-19 protocols, Aaron Bronsteter of TSN.ca reports.
ANALYSIS
It's unclear who exactly is associated with the COVID-19 issue that is causing this fight to be canceled but the UFC is not taking any risks. Gillespie and Riddell will not be fighting Saturday night but the UFC did confirm that they plan to reschedule the fight at a later date.
