Hopes to re-sign with Chicago
LWChicago Blackhawks  Minors
July 21, 2020
Caggiula hopes to re-sign with the Blackhawks this offseason, Ben Pope of the Chicago Sun Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Much like many of the teams around the NHL, the Blackhawks will be in a major cap crunch this offseason, particularly since they currently don't have a No. 1 netminder signed for next season, but the team would surely love to keep Caggiula around if possible. The 26-year-old winger has dealt with injuries over the past two campaigns, but he's also proven to be a versatile player that can play up and down the lineup when injuries strike, an invaluable quality. If he's going to remain in Chicago, the Blackhawks will likely have to get creative in the form of trades and even a buyout or two this offseason.

2017
Caggiula had the worst year of his NHL career with 15 points in 40 contests for the Blackhawks in 2019-20. He skated only 11:49 per game and garnered little interest as a free agent until the Coyotes signed him to a league-minimum deal in December. There's no guarantee he'll play every game in the desert, but he's averaged over two hits per game in his career, giving his new team a physical edge. The 26-year-old probably won't appeal to fantasy managers in standard formats, but a hot start to the season could make him worth a look in deep leagues.
Caggiula began the 2018-19 campaign with the Oilers, notching seven goals and 11 points before a mid-season trade sent him to Chicago, where he picked up an additional five goals and 12 points in 26 contests. The 5-foot-10 winger's compete level is off the charts and he's surprisingly physical for his size, but he'll likely have to settle for a bottom-six role with the Blackhawks in 2019-20, and won't see much time on the man advantage, capping his fantasy upside. Caggiula could threaten the 30-point mark if he's able to stay healthy this season, but fantasy owners would be wise to target players with higher upside in the later rounds of this year's drafts.
Caggiula finished the 2017-18 campaign with five points in the final 10 games, bringing his season total to 13 goals and seven assists through 67 contests. Last year, Edmonton deployed the Pickering, Ontario native across several lines as well as the power play (0:59) and penalty kill (0:44). The 23-year-old winger is best used in deep leagues and daily formats until he finds a more consistent role. Caggiula signed on for two more years this past offseason, affording him greater continuity within Edmonton's system.
After starring in his senior season at the University of North Dakota to the tune of 25 goals and 51 points in 39 games, Caggiula signed an entry-level deal with the Oilers and jumped right into the NHL last season. Though he missed the first month-plus to an undisclosed injury, Caggiula went on to play 60 games, recording seven goals, 11 assists and a plus-3 rating from Edmonton’s bottom-six ranks. Not a big guy at 5-foot-10, 185 pounds, Caggiula nonetheless plays a physical, high-energy game that complements his team’s high-end scoring well, and he has the potential to rise into the top-six ranks eventually. For now, though, he projects to be stuck in a fourth-line role at left wing, though he'll probably see some power-play time again after averaging 1:39 per game last year.
