Another tournament winner, at the 2019 Byron Nelson, Kang gets one more exempt season. He missed 17 of 31 cuts with one top-25. However, he saved the best of last, as it was a tie for 15th at the Wyndham. Momentum for this season? In a word, no.
Kang picked up his PGA Tour during the 2018-19 season and although he failed to find a win this past season, he still managed to put up some strong numbers. Kang has gradually improved throughout his seven seasons on the PGA Tour and he's likely get better this season as well, but his cap number isn't discounted quite as much as some others. As such, he's not a great option for salary cap purposes this season, he's merely someone that should be considered as a secondary option.
Kang had a decent rookie season in 2016, followed by a strong sophomore campaign, but his third season left a lot to be desired. That season however put him in a good spot for a bounce-back this past season and bounce-back he did. Kang picked-up his first PGA Tour victory this past season and set a career high in earnings. While he looks like the real deal, he simply set the bar too high this past season for salary cap purposes.
Kang's 2017-2018 season was made by a pair of 3rd-place finishes. Once at the beginning of the season that went unnoticed and another towards the end of the season that caught a few eyes. The 3rd-place finish near the end of the season, came in July at the Quicken Loans National. During said event, Kang gave himself a rather generous drop in the final round that undoubtedly helped him finish where he did. While the drop paid immediate dividends, it most likely had a negative impact during the events that followed as he had to deal with the added attention of being labeled a cheater. Lost in all of the drama was that Kang was in the midst of a pretty bad season prior to that 3rd-place finish and this on the heels of a strong 2016-2017 campaign. Kang has the upside to improve significantly this season, but it's a question of whether he can put the drama behind him and just play golf. The risk is probably a bit too high though as a salary cap selection this season.
Kang's entire 2016-17 season was built upon a three-week stretch where he posted a runner-up at the Shell Houston Open, a T11 at the Heritage and a T6 at Valero Texas Open. Outside of that stretch, Kang accomplished very little and that's a little concerning heading into this season. Kang has improved in each of his three seasons on the PGA Tour, but his jump from the previous season to last season, may have been a bit too much. Although he has plenty of upside, the bar was set too high last year, and as such, he's not a great salary cap pick this season.
Three years on the PGA Tour and Kang hasn't accomplished much in that time. Last year was the first that he finished inside the top-125, so he's showing some progress, but his cut percentage was just over 50% last season and he only managed two top-10s. It is encouraging that he significantly improved his cuts-made percentage last season, but there just doesn't seem to be much upside. As such, he's not a good salary cap option this year. In drafts, he'll go very late.
Kang spent most of his rookie season in limbo as his status for the upcoming season wasn't settled until the season's final event. Kang actually needed every bit of his third-place prize to sneak into the Top 125 last season. That's not exactly what fantasy owners want out of any of players, no matter what they pay. Kang might find the going a little easier this season after getting acclimated last year, but the difference won't be enough to make him draftable in either salary cap or draft leagues.
