Earns just two touches in 2023
WRLos Angeles Rams
January 16, 2024
Johnson caught two passes for eight yards and a touchdown during the 2023 regular season.
ANALYSIS
There was little opportunity for the fourth year wideout to produce, as the receiving corps as a whole for the Rams stayed relatively healthy apart from Cooper Kupp missing four games at the start of the year. Johnson was only activated from the practice squad once all season, earning his third touchdown in four seasons in the NFL with both the Rams and 49ers resting starters for the playoffs. Johnson is a restricted free agent in 2024, but with how little he was utilized by the Rams, he likely will have to find an opportunity elsewhere next season.

Johnson was claimed off waivers by the Texans on Wednesday after he surprisingly failed to make the Buccaneers' 53-man roster Tuesday, Field Yates of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson posted 11 receptions for 133 yards on 13 targets over three preseason games for the Buccaneers, but Jenna Laine of ESPN.com reports that head coach Todd Bowles largely made his decision to exclude Johnson from the roster based on the fact that the 2020 fifth-round pick doesn't contribute on special teams and would therefore have likely been a healthy scratch many weeks. Meanwhile, the outlook for playing time should be appreciably brighter for Johnson in Houston, where he could conceivably vault over journeyman Chris Moore for the No. 3 receiver spot in relatively short order.

2020
Johnson tripled his catch total and drew more than three times more targets in 2021 than in his rookie 2020 campaign, leading to a 36-360-0 line. The one statistical downgrade for the Minnesota product was that he didn't get into the end zone after notching a pair of touchdown grabs the season prior. Although Russell Gage and Julio Jones were brought in this offseason, Chris Godwin's recovery from a December ACL tear could extend into the regular season, giving Johnson a chance to take some reps. If Johnson makes a strong impression during that span, he could remain in a decent complementary role the rest of the way.
Johnson's lot in his rookie season essentially was the wide-receiver version of running back Ke'Shawn Vaughn's. Like his fellow 2020 draftee, Johnson was stuck behind multiple capable veterans on the depth chart and consequently finished with a modest 12-169-2 line on 17 targets across 14 games. The Minnesota product was well regarded by the coaching staff, however, and he stood out for his ability to make difficult, contested catches. The increasing trust was illustrated by the fact he saw 46 offensive snaps in Tampa Bay's first three postseason games. With some valuable experience under his belt, Johnson could push Scotty Miller for the No. 4 receiver role this summer, or, at minimum, earn an appreciable boost in work in his second season.
The consensus on Johnson is that he was short-changed by the draft process, as the prolific Minnesota alum's college production was befitting of a higher selection. Johnson finished his four-year Golden Gophers career with 33 touchdowns over 43 games and a combined 164 receptions and 2,487 yards over his last two college seasons. The 21-year-old could make a strong case for a solid rookie role, considering he displayed an impressive degree of red-zone prowess during his college days. Johnson led all Power 5 schools in red-zone catches, red-zone receiving yards (320) and red-zone touchdown receptions (23) from 2016 through 2019, the type of track record that could lead to a rapid rapport with new Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady. However, Johnson will have to outperform a pair of incumbent receivers in Scott Miller and Justin Watson to secure the No. 3 receiver job, so training camp and preseason project to be particularly critical for the rookie.
