OwnersBox DFS: A Closer Look At SuperFlex Strategy

OwnersBox DFS: A Closer Look At SuperFlex Strategy

This article is part of our DFS Football 101 series.

OwnersBox has prided itself on offering innovative twists on traditional salary-cap daily fantasy sports contests since it's inception, and ahead of the 2021 NFL season, the platform has taken a major step toward enhancing the already vast appeal of NFL DFS contest participation.

OwnersBox will be debuting a subset of NFL DFS contests based on a new SuperFlex format, where placekicker and team defense positions -- which inherently carry a robust amount of fantasy volatility -- are instead replaced by three "flex" roster spots, including a SuperFlex.

The SuperFlex spot is one that allows for the rostering of a second quarterback, or an additional running back, receiver or tight end.

Naturally, the most eye-catching aspect of this option for a majority of DFS players will be the ability to stack a lineup with a second quarterback, which, theoretically, will raise the overall fantasy-scoring upside of the lineup significantly.

OwnersBox is commemorating the rollout of both the newly expanded 2021 NFL season and the SuperFlex format by offering a $100,000 SuperFlex Salary Cap contest with a $15,000 first prize.

While the entry free is $10, Rotowire users can claim a free entry with promo code DREW9.

Starting in early March, Massachusetts residents can now participate in online sports betting using their mobile devices. By signing up for a new account, one of the advantages is the availability of welcome bonuses that can aid in starting your online betting experience.

New players can take advantage of a range of Massachusetts sports betting promos offered by six sportsbooks that could lead to thousands of dollars in welcome offers.

For instance, new players at BetMGM Massachusetts can receive a generous welcome bonus by redeeming the BetMGM Massachusetts bonus code. Previously, sports bettors were given $200 in bonus bets before the launch of online sports betting in Massachusetts. They can claim a first bet offer up to $1,000 since its launch.

Bettors in Massachusetts can use the Caesars Sportsbook Massachusetts promo code and receive a first bet on Caesars that is worth up to $1,500. This is the best deal currently available for sports bettors in the Bay State, as Caesars Massachusetts aims to make its presence known in New England.

SuperFlex NFL Roster Format

SuperFlex NFL contests have a $50,000 salary cap. The full roster configuration for NFL SuperFlex contests is as follows:

1 QB

2 RB

2 WR

1 TE

2 FLEX Positions – RB/WR/TE

1 SuperFlex Position- QB/RB/WR/TE

SuperFlex Contest Strategies

Sweating a SuperFlex lineup through an NFL Sunday will undoubtedly be exciting, considering the amount of potential fantasy scoring that should pile up.

However, the strategy involved in putting together an optimal roster in such a format should be equally invigorating to those who enjoy the cerebral elements of DFS roster construction.

OwnersBox SuperFlex contest participants will have some decisions to make with respect to the SuperFlex roster spot, in particular, on a weekly basis.

Rostering a second quarterback will often be the popular and prudent way to go, especially with the two additional non-SuperFlex flex spots offering ample opportunity to stack multiple pass catchers for each of the two QBs on one's roster.

Nevertheless, those who prefer a balanced approach across their roster may sometimes have to sacrifice a bit of upside in one of their QB choices to avoid having to compromise security across the rest of the lineup.

Let's take a closer look at what some of these strategies involving the filling of the SuperFlex position could be:

Two Top-Tier QBs Approach

Using an example from Week 1, say you want to shoot for the moon and nab both Patrick Mahomes ($8,100) and Josh Allen ($7,700), slotting one into the traditional QB spot and the other in SuperFlex. That leaves $34,200 to fill out seven spots, an average of $4,885 per position.

Utilizing that remaining salary cap budget to work around for the rest of your lineup selections, you would be settling for the likes of Chase Edmonds or Kareem Hunt at RB, Jarvis Landry or DeVante Parker at WR and Dallas Goedert or Mike Gesicki at tight end.

All are certainly solid choices, but none are top 3 options at their respective positions like Mahomes and Allen are at quarterback.

"Star and Solid" Approach

Conversely, if that same lineup begins with Mahomes and Mac Jones ($5,200), the user enjoys a bit more breathing room with an average of $5,242 per remaining position.

While that's not a huge leap – about $400 extra per position – it can lead to upgrades over the previously cited choices. For example, the likes of Miles Sanders or Chris Carson at RB, Cooper Kupp or Kenny Golladay at WR and George Kittle or Kyle Pitts at TE are in range with the bit of extra cash.

Two Bargain Starters Approach

Naturally, one can still take the route of rostering two quarterbacks by picking two discount options. Such an adjustment will allow the rest of the roster to be filled with at least a couple elite options at RB, WR and/or TE.

A Week 1 example would be a roster that features Jared Goff ($5,700) and Jones as its two signal-callers. At a combined salary of $10,900, this approach will leave an average of $5,585 to use per remaining position, another incremental bump.

In this case, there's arguably wiggle room to take the leap up to a Christian McCaffrey or Alvin Kamara at RB, DeAndre Hopkins or DK Metcalf at WR or Travis Kelce or George Kittle at tight end and still have reasonable options to fill out the rest of the roster with.

Or you could also opt to not stray too far above the $5.6K average number at any one position. In this manner, you'll still be able to build a lineup that's stocked with rock-solid options that have highly reliable projected touch counts from top to bottom.

No-QB in SuperFlex approach

Conversely, participants could take what would likely be a contrarian approach and bypass rostering a second quarterback, instead opting to fill the SuperFlex spot with a star running back, receiver or tight end on a week when there are an abundance of such players in favorable matchups.

This will always be an interesting judgement call to make, as missing out on monster games from a couple of different quarterbacks in any given week – even if the lineup has one or more of their pass catchers – could automatically place that roster in dire straits in a tournament.

But pinning down a prolific performance by a running back, receiver or even elite tight end over a heavily-rostered QB could pay off handsomely if the signal-caller underperforms.

NFL Fantasy Points Scoring System

All OwnersBox NFL contests, including SuperFlex, have the following scoring format:

Passing/Return yards = 1 point per 20 yards

Rushing/Receiving yards = 1 point per 10 yards

Receptions = 1 point

Touchdowns = 6 points

Interceptions = -3 points

Fumbles Lost = -3 points

Sacks Surrendered = -1 point

Two-Point Conversions = 2
