Rehab assignment starts soon
2BPittsburgh Pirates  AAA
June 20, 2022
VanMeter will likely start a rehab assignment this week, reports Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com.
ANALYSIS
VanMeter, Kevin Newman, and Yoshi Tsutsugo are all expected to begin rehab assignments in the coming days. VanMeter was removed from a game on June 1 and was placed on the injured list shortly thereafter with a fractured left ring finger. The utilityman was in the midst of a 10-for-30 run before his injury after getting off to a slow start at the plate. With Diego Castillo receiving regular playing time and Oneil Cruz reportedly joining the big-league club Monday, VanMeter may have trouble finding regular playing time upon returning.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2021
2020
The Triple-A juiced ball in 2019 propelled VanMeter from obscurity to the major-league lineup; he hit 13 HR in his first 29 games with Louisville that year. He had some nice moments as a rookie with the Reds but also some brutal ones, particularly in the outfield. He does not do any one thing particularly well offensively and the Reds ran out of patience after VanMeter got off to a 2-for-34 start to 2020, with 16 strikeouts. He was flipped to the Diamondbacks along with Stuart Fairchild in exchange for Archie Bradley, and while VanMeter played a little better after the change of scenery, he was still well below league average with the bat. VanMeter is not a pedigree guy and will be on a short leash in a utility role with Arizona if he's even on the roster to begin 2021.
VanMeter rose from obscurity and debuted with the Reds in early May after hitting 13 home runs in 29 games with Triple-A Louisville to begin 2019. He was used mostly off the bench initially and ended up riding the shuttle before settling in with the big club for good after the All-Star break. While most of his time came in left field, VanMeter also logged starts at four other positions: first base, second, third and right field. He was much better at home and versus opposite-handed pitching, batting just .186 outside of Great American Ball Park and .125 without the platoon edge. The overall numbers cratered in September, and while some of that may have been due to poor batted-ball luck (.174 BABIP), it left the front office looking for an upgrade at what projected to be VanMeter's position in second base. They found one in Mike Moustakas, leaving VanMeter to compete for a utility role this spring.
