To retire after season
RGold Coast Suns
August 17, 2021
Smith announced that he will retire after Round 23 against Sydney.
ANALYSIS
Smith split time between Gold Coast and Geelong, playing in 123 games and helping bring the Suns into the AFL back in 2011. In 2021, the injury to Jarrod Witts (torn ACL) let Smith appear in a few more games before finishing his career.

Back from concussion
RGold Coast Suns
Concussion
July 6, 2021
Smith (concussion) has returned to training ahead of Round 17 against GWS, according to Head Physiotherapist Lindsay Bull. "Zac was training with the group today as a non-contact player and he'll be fully involved in training on Friday before being available for the weekend as well."
ANALYSIS
Smith has cleared his protocols and now just needs to get through training in order to play. His season-high of 13 disposals in a game doesn't offer much for fantasy.
Out against Richmond
RGold Coast Suns
Concussion
June 30, 2021
Smith will miss Round 16 against Richmond due to "concussion-type symptoms", according to Head Physiotherapist Lindsay Bull.
ANALYSIS
It's not clear if Smith truly suffered a concussion, though he likely needs at least a week to be fit enough to play. There are barely any options left at ruck for the Suns if Smith is forced to miss multiple weeks.
Could return to AFL action Round 6

Knee - PCL
April 21, 2021
Coach Stuart Dew said Smith (knee) will play this week, though it's undetermined whether the ruck will play at the AFL or VFL level, AFL Ratings reports.
ANALYSIS
Smith was expected to miss up to 12 weeks after suffering a PCL injury in early March, but he's set to retake the field in about half that time this week. He may first get his feet wet in the VFL but is nearing his return to action for Gold Coast.
Maintaining schedule for return
RGold Coast Suns
Knee - PCL
April 20, 2021
Smith is nearing a return from his PCL injury in his knee.
ANALYSIS
The report didn't cite a specific return date or timeline for Smith's return, but evidently he's getting close. Smith has yet to play a game this season, and Jarrod Witts will continue seeing plenty of action until Smith is ready to return.
Out three months
RGold Coast Suns
Knee - PCL
March 3, 2021
Smith will miss "up to 12 weeks" after injuring his PCL during Saturday's practice match against Brisbane.
ANALYSIS
There's a chance that Smith could return in fewer than three months, but for now that's a safe estimate for when he could return. This leaves the Suns heavily reliant on Jarrod Witts heading into the new season and Smith will hope to return in late-spring after not playing a single time in 2020.
